Mark your calendars for the 2010 US Jr. Chess Congress to be held on February 20-21!
Not to sit on our laurels (such as they are), our practice sessions now shift to readying ourselves for the 2010 US Jr. Chess Congress to be held at the Radisson Hotel at the Indianapolis International Airport.
The time control will be much slower than the CYO league and tournament. The CYO time control was G/30. The US Jr. Congress is G/60 (for rounds 1-4), and G/90 (for rounds 5-6). G/60 means each player has 60 minutes to complete his or her whole game.
Please click here to sign up (or let me know via e-mail) if you are interested in being in the tournament (you must be available from 9am - 6:30p on Saturday, February 20th, and from 9am - 5pm on Sunday, February 21st). Cost is $40.

That's right, not just undefeated in the regular season, but today we won the post-season tournament!

Congratulations to our "traveling team"! Undefeated in the regular season (5 - 0), we have the post-season tournament tomorrow morning (most of the day, really).
The scores have yet to be officially verified, but I believe that we are THE 2009 SEASON 8th GRADE AND UNDER CITY-WIDE CHAMPIONS!

T-Shirts will be handed out on Wednesday at our final matches, and Saturday at the post-season tournament.
Note these shirts *need to be returned* once you leave the club. If you outgrow them and are still in the club, you can turn them in for a larger replacement.

Going into the last two matches, OLL 1 is in the lead, with three points. This Wednesday, we will play two games: OLL 1 will play Central Catholic while OLL 2 plays Christ the King, then OLL 1 will play St. Pius while OLL 2 plays St. Malachy.

At what point should I forfeit in a chess tournament?
I am proud of how our "traveling team" did overall in their games last week. We also had a GREAT practice this Monday. Writing down moves is CRITICAL TO IMPROVEMENT. After each game, be sure to analyze it using the moves you wrote down.
Also, NEVER FORFEIT in a tournament (or in practice, for that matter). As long as you are playing you are giving your opponent the opportunity to blunder! But...if you forfeit, YOU LOSE. Period.

The Chicago Toy and Game Fair invites all chess players to our Fair November 21st and 22nd at Navy Pier.
One of our many exhibitors is Renaissance Knights and they invite you to play chess on one of their giant chess sets or test your chess acumen against one of their experts. You can also join other fair attendees in a quad tournament where you'll compete for fun and prizes. They will also have tables available for friendly games between attendees.

For the third year, ChiTAG, along with sponsors, including the Toy Industry Association and Lund and Company Invention, LLC, will also hold the Young Inventor Challenge. Students 18 and under are invited to submit original game and toy inventions by October 31; details are available on the web site at www.chitag.com. Voting for the Young Inventor Challenge winner will take place by popular vote during the fair.
Fair hours are 10 am to 6 pm on Saturday and 10 am to 5 pm on Sunday. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children. Children under three are admitted free; Scouts in uniform, teachers and librarians are also admitted free of charge. There are $10 off parking coupons available at the ticket booth.

Cost: Rated USCF (United States Chess Federation) players pay an entry fee of $5, and must have a current membership (available on-site). There is a $2.00 entry fee for unrated players, and you must join the USCF ($7-$12 for one time, or $20-$40 for a whole year, depending on your age).
Prizes: Free entry to World Chess Championship Qualifying Tournament ($100 value)
Format: Everyone plays three games.
