Chess Club Starts Again!

Our first meeting went very well – thanks to Mrs. Swinefurth, Mrs. Schmoll, and Mrs. Gyurek for helping to make it happen! We had about 10 students, and everyone seemed to enjoy him/herself.

We reviewed movement of the pawns and pieces, and started playing each other.

Don’t pay too much attention to the “standings” below, since we’ve only played a game or two so far, it doesn’t mean much. Also remember – you’ll usually learn more by losing than winning.

Feel free to play against each other outside of club time – just e-mail me who won and who lost.

Some items I'd like to address for next time, in no particular order:

1. Etiquette (shaking hands, no "I'm going to beat you.", no gloating)
2. Review castling, pawn promotion rules
3. Cover draw via repetition ("perpetual check").
4. We will dismiss at 4:45p in the future, and pickup will be at the café doors.
5. At end of meeting, boards need to be set up, reviewed, and then put away (so that we have all the parts).
6. Prayer before we start.
