Our year-end tournament is coming up, and all students in grades K-12 are invited! Please pass this along to interested parents and students in elementary and high schools.

What: Everyone plays three (30 minute) games. Two sections (5th grade and under, and 12th grade and under).

If you send out an email reminder, let the students know that this is a pretty well run tournament and could be a fun way to try it out. It is inexpensive ($15 plus USCF membership if they don't have it already) and if they have a rating, they are only playing against players in the range...for example, a 248 would play in the 200 to 299 range. If they don't have a rating, the groupings are the same as the last tournament: 3rd grade & Under, 6th Grade & Under, 12th grade & Under.

Many experienced players will already have a rating so they will be playing in the rated players groups. That's not to say the competition won't be there, though as OLL has many competitive players who haven't become rated and other kids will be in the same boat. There are usually lots of firsttimers at something like this, so don't let that stop anyone from trying it!

We haven't been a several years, but the setup in the past was that the gym was used for the chess play and the cafeteria and hallways of the school were used for skittle areas (for practice games and just to hang out during the downtown-kids play chess or other games during the downtime). I believe they sell snacks and probably pizza but is easy enough to bring a sack lunch if you wish. The school has a playground, too, that has been available in the past.

Kieron,

You will be pleased to hear that the OLL team of Eddie Schwering, Sam DeFreese and Croix Gyurek presented Our Lady of Lourdes in a good light. Trophies were given to the top 25 in each group. Because team play was based on players with the same age group and Sam, Ed and Croix all competed in different fields , OLL did not really compete as a team. As individuals, they each did OLL proud given the fact that this is an annual national tournament with repeat participants.

In 8th Grade & Under, Eddie took a trophy for 23rd place. He went into the last round ranked 21 of 26, I think. Eddie entered a tough class of competitors and pulled a couple wins in a field of mostly experienced players.

In 6th Grade & Under, Sam had an especially tough challenge. Not only was this his first major tournament, but there were 65 competitors in his field, with the highest ranking near 1700! Sam came in 53rd of 65.

In 3rd Grade & Under, Croix received a trophy for 22nd of a total of 52 competitors. He won 4 rounds and lost 2.

There was one team of two boys who ranked 6th in their bracket so perhaps all that was needed was one other player in each field. The boys did very well, considering that U.S. Jr. Chess Congress boasted players from many states, including Indiana (Evansville, Fort Wayne, Anderson, Terre Haute were top contenders but other schools had players, too). We met players from Michigan, Chicago, St. Louis, Kentucky. There were players from other states as well (Colorado, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia. Florida, Kansas, Maryland, Missouri, New York when we had checked the website.

"OLL911" is the Our Lady of Lourdes emergency broadcast system for cellphones. In the event the Principal or Pastor of OLL would like to inform all guardians of a time-sensitive (that is, within 24 hours) issue, anyone signed up for OLL911 will receive a text message on his cell phone. In addition, at 11:00am on the first Friday of each month, there is a test message sent.

We estimate you will thus receive 15-25 messages per YEAR if you sign up for OLL911.

On your cell phone, send a text message to 40404 with the content "follow OLL911" (without the quotation marks). This is the hardest part of the instructions! If you don't know how to send a text message, and can't get your pre-teen to help you, call Kieron or Jeff at the numbers below and he will talk you through it.

Twitter will respond back with: "Welcome to Twitter! Reply with SIGNUP to begin. Already on Twitter? Reply with your 'USERNAME' instead."

At that point, you need to reply to the text message you just received with your own text message: Simply the word "SIGNUP" (without the quotation marks).

You will then reply to the next message with a single word (which can be anything you like - and will be your "username").

2010 US Jr. Chess Congress: February 20-21

Mark your calendars for the 2010 US Jr. Chess Congress to be held on February 20-21!

Not to sit on our laurels (such as they are), our practice sessions now shift to readying ourselves for the 2010 US Jr. Chess Congress to be held at the Radisson Hotel at the Indianapolis International Airport.

The time control will be much slower than the CYO league and tournament. The CYO time control was G/30. The US Jr. Congress is G/60 (for rounds 1-4), and G/90 (for rounds 5-6). G/60 means each player has 60 minutes to complete his or her whole game.

I am proud of how our "traveling team" did overall in their games last week. We also had a GREAT practice this Monday. Writing down moves is CRITICAL TO IMPROVEMENT. After each game, be sure to analyze it using the moves you wrote down.

Also, NEVER FORFEIT in a tournament (or in practice, for that matter). As long as you are playing you are giving your opponent the opportunity to blunder! But...if you forfeit, YOU LOSE. Period.

Instead of our normal club meeting on May 18th, we are hosting the Indianapolis Youth Open from 4p-6p.

BE SURE TO WEAR YOUR CLUB T-SHIRT THAT DAY TO SCHOOL. This is an "approved" exception to the normal dress code.

We are working on having the concession stand open that evening.

This is a four round swiss-style tournament with 12 minutes for each player to complete their game (G/12).

It is open to all students ages 18 and under.

Prizes: Trophies and chess clocks ($30 retail value) for 1st-3rd place

First Post after Summer

I hope everyone's summer was fun!

But, now that it's officially over (at least from a school perspective), I have two questions:

1. On what day (after school) do we want to meet each week for chess club? I can do it any day. You can send me an e-mail with your preferences, or vote on the sidebar on the left. You can vote for multiple days, if (for instance) you like any day except Tuesday.
2. Do you want to play in the CYO Chess League? Teams of four club members will play against other schools on Wednesdays starting October 15th (there are three games, and a postseason tournament on a Saturday). The cost for this is $25, and the deadline to tell me is Monday, September 15th. You don't have to come to the weekly club meetings in order to play in the league, and vice versa!

Finally, some format changes:

1. Kindergarten and First Graders need to be accompanied by a guardian

2. Chess Club will end at 4pm for children in grades K-5, and at 5pm for 6-8th graders

3. Costs for OLL Students: $2 per meeting, or $20 per semester (in advance)

4. Costs for non-OLL Students: $3 per meeting, or $30 per semester (in advance)

5. You will need a club T-Shirt, which is $10 (we'll order these later, for those who need them)

A special treat

Today, our last meeting of the school year, Mrs. Guyrek made a special treat - brownies in the shape and color of a chess board! Yum!

I was also presented with two very nice gifts: An electronic chess clock, and a home-made "Thank You" card (signed by the whole club).

How thoughtful!

I've really enjoyed this year, and look forward to starting up the summer chess in a month or so!

There were 22 attendees, and we divided the tournament into two groups and three games (so a "perfect score" is three points).

K-8 Results (11 players):
1st, 3 points: Croix G (1st grade - OLL)
2nd, 2.5 points: Jonathan H (5th grade - OLL)
3rd, 2.5 points: Mark S (8th grade - ICS)

Jonathan was up against the ropes vs. Mark S in a blitz tie-breaker game to determine 2nd vs. 3rd place, but Mark ran out of time.

K-4 Results (11 players):
1st, 2.5 points: Sam D (2nd grade - Lumen Christi)
2nd, 2.5 points: Ben B (3rd grade - OLL)
3rd, 2.5 points: Austin L (3rd grade - OLL)

A three-way tie in points required a tie-breaker based on the strength of the opponents each player defeated.

The Chess Tournament went well this year. We had about 28 attend, including about 8 from other schools.

State Scholastic Tournament

There is a state scholastic tournament approaching. The deadline for registration is December 24 (late registration is December 29). There are two dates for the regionals, January 5th and January 12th. The state finals are January 26th. None of the events are in Indianapolis and the sites vary. Croix is registering for the regional in Terre Haute on January 12th.

There are other tournaments posted at this site from time to time, including a girls State Championship.

There will be a chess tournament for grades K-8 open to the public on Monday, 12/10 after school until 5:30p in the cafeteria. Entry fee is $0.50 ($1.00 for non-parishioners), and there are $50.00 in prizes, including top prizes of a Web Kinz, or $15 towards a video game.

Please bring a chess set if you have one.

You don’t need to be in chess club to participate, and the normal chess club meeting is canceled for that day.

OLL booth at the Halloween festival this Saturday

The chess club will have some space at the OLL booth at the Halloween festival this Saturday. Please come by and play a game, say “hi”, get some free candy, sign up your friends to play chess, or buy a chance (for only a quarter!) to win a chess set.

We could also use volunteers to “man” the booth…just drop by any time on Saturday and sit for awhile! There will already be an adult there from OLL…

I talked with Jerry Ross, the CYO coordinator for the league and got more info.

It starts 10/17, games are probably on Wednesdays (one game per week), and lasts 3 weeks. Games start at 5p or 5:30p.

Discovery Channel Store at Keystone at the Crossing (on the west side just before the escalator that goes up to the crosswalk) is going out of business. They currently have Excalibur Chess sets, regularly $29.00 for 40% off. They had 3 or 4 of the full size sets (battery powered with 72 levels and hint capability for one or two players). They also had 2 or 3 handheld Excalibur games for 40% of 19.99 (so, $12 with the discount). There were quite a few Excalibur Chess/Checker handheld games that were also 40% of 19.99. The Chess only games also had in memory famous chess games in lieu of no checkers.

Discipline Policy - A slight Change

“3-strikes” policy. Any misbehavior (including bad sportsmanship) earns a strike. There is no consequence for the first (it’s like a warning). The second is reported to your parents, and earns a 10 minute time-out. If you get three strikes, you have to sit out the rest of the meeting, and are suspended for the next meeting (ie, you can't come the next time). The strikes reset each meeting, so you start fresh.

If you earn 3-strikes TWICE, you can't come back to chess club until the next semester.

Brain Food Needed! Please let me know if you can sign up to bring a healthy snack for the chess club kids (4/9 is covered). We don’t need drinks, since there is a water fountain, and juice and water (only - per school policy) can be purchased from the vending machine.

Up to now, we have been doing “free play”. Next week we will review how the pieces move (for the younger students), so next Monday right after school would be a great day to start if you’ve been thinking of coming, but haven’t yet!

At a scholastic tournament (school age), some of them have awards for teams when there are three or more students who register on the same team. Teams can earn points toward a trophy at the match. Maybe someday, OLL Chess Club will have one for the school!

If someone is interested in attending a chess tournament, there are a few things to learn about etiquette, rules, etc. It’s a different setting than club games, but fun!

We started the "no talking" rule. It was A LOT quieter, and only six members had to be put in a time-out during the course of the meeting. I think it'll be fewer every time.

The OLL Chess Club has decided to change the dues from $1.00 to $0.50. We also have decided that you can only whisper to the person that is playing them. If they talk they get a strike after they get two strikes they have to sit in the corner for five minutes and every time they talk it adds one minute and the officers will rotate to see who sits with them.

We’re buying more zip- lock bags for the chess pieces.

Because of our growth, starting next Monday, March 5th, we will be meeting in the Cafeteria.

Our growth also means we could use some help. If any parents are available on Mondays to drop in and help, please do so (you don’t need to know how to play chess to help)!!

Also, feel free to pick up earlier if you want or need to (this might be especially true of the K-2nd graders, if they don't want to play chess for more than an hour).

We collected dues for the first time. 20 members paid, 12 forgot (38%).

The club has $62 in cash, has $42 in pre-paid dues, and thus has $20 available to spend right now.

Open House

The open house was a success - many thanks to JakeB for a great decorating job. He made a cool banner, and the table looked great.

We had three chess boards going the whole time, and had 3-4 students express interest in coming to chess club.

Decisions

It was decided to name the club OLL Chess Club.

OLL Chess Club will participate in the Open House. All chess club members may participate. There will be a sign up sheet on the table.

Only the equipment manager and Mr. Mitchell can get the chess boards in and out of the chess closet.

All members must attend two regular meetings and the annual meeting.

Dues for each chess club meeting will be $1.

If members don’t pay for four chess club meetings Mr. Mitchell will e-mail parents and you will have to bring $5 to the next meeting. If the $5 is not paid you may not attend the next chess club meeting.

Assignments

Jacob will decorate the table for Open House and bring three to four chess sets.
